I met Mari when she taught Estonian for librarians at the European Commission. She proved to be a wonderful teacher who tried to meet all the difficult requirements of a such a course. Later Mari continued teaching Estonian, also in Spain. We became close friends, she stayed for some time in my home and came to meet my family. We discussed linguistic problems and other matters, like picking mushrooms. I tried to get her a place to live in the jungle of Brussels and to help her when her mother died in Helsinki. I knew Mari had a severe heart problem, but she seemed to live without thinking too much about it. Later I found out she was writing her doctoral thesis here in Belgium and had chosen to live with Mario. Hearing about her death in April this year was horrible for me an my family, we felt we had not done enough to see her more. But we remember her as a splendid girl, ready to listen to others, always smiling, a great linguist and a tolerant and funny person!
